What Initiated my Interest in the Field of Engineering

Growing up my parents always encourage my two older brothers and me to play outside and find entertainment in the world around us rather than through a television screen. For birthdays and Christmas every year, rather than getting toys or video games, my brothers and I would get building sets, tools, ropes, and pulleys. One Christmas we even received what looked like a box of electrical trash, which provided many hours of fun. The photo in the top left shows the result of asking my dad one day, “what happens when you shine a light into a box of mirrors?” and his attitude was that there was only one way to find out! This encouragement towards hands-on problem solving was instrumental in the fascination I now have for the field of engineering.
