International Communications as an Operations Engineering Intern with the Subsea Division

The summer after my sophomore year I interned with TechnipFMC as a Mechanical Engineering Intern for Subsea Operations. In this role, I designed a hydraulic piston with an India-based design team. This piston was a secondary project for the India team and they were often inclined to delay my action items while they prioritized their other projects. Throughout the summer, as I became more comfortable in my position, I realized that I did not need to be given authority to lead a project, I simply had to assume that authority.

After taking on the attitude that I was the project manager of this assignment, I became more confident in leading weekly meetings, getting time commitments from the India team members, and holding them accountable to those commitments. The entire design and prototyping phase of a 100-ton hydraulic piston was completed in two months and the manager of the India team informed me that this rapid pace was made possible by my strong project management efforts continually driving for progress.
