Communication / Resident Advisor

Resident Advisor for the University Lofts On-Campus Apartments

My junior and Senior year of college I was a resident advisor at the University Lofts. My experience as an RA in a college dormitory is about what you would anticipate, full of surprises and very unique interactions. This role has allowed for fairly extensive experience in fast-paced conflict management and threat prioritization. Additionally, as an RA I had an opportunity for conflict management that I had not experienced before, intervention between close friends or roommates. As the first line of defense in a dormitory, RA’s encounter a wide variety of challenging situations and I heavily value what I learned through this position.

Leadership Development Coordinator for the Student Housing and Residential Life

In my Junior year I was awarded the position of Leadership Development Coordinator for the University Lofts through the Student Housing and Residential Life. My responsibility was to present at staff meetings and teach other RA’s how to develop community and facilitate communication between their residents. During these presentations, I shared lessons I learned as a teaching assistant as well as lessons over communication and administration found through internet research. I really take pride in this role because I feel that it is a logical continuation in my personal development; I began by focusing on my own effective communication, I later shifted my focus to promoting open communication among those closest to me, then to teaching communications skills to early freshman engineers, and finally to teaching other RA’s how to facilitate and teach communication skills to their residents. I believe these experiences will be valuable in both my future home life and my professional career.
